There’s a reason I call the start of Hebrews 6 the “Four Major Doctrines”—because eternal peace hangs on them. Knowing what truly happens when we, our loved ones, or even the family pet “give up the ghost” doesn’t leave us bound by fear or ignorance. It sets us free in the truth.
Hebrews 6:1-3 KJV
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, [2] Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. [3] And this will we do, if God permit.
The Four Major Doctrines: Foundations for Peace and Growth
The unknown writer urges us to leave the elementary principles and press on to maturity. These four doctrines in Hebrews 6:2-3 form the next layer—practical, powerful steps every believer needs solid ground on before going deeper. But teaching these doctrines is by God’s permission.
Doctrine of baptisms (washings)
This covers the outward rituals of conversion and cleansing: water baptism as identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. It’s the public mark of new life, repentance, and witnessed commitment—like a marriage vow before God. Repent and be holy! Three baptisms—separate and distinct, yet all equally important—like a three-fold cord that cannot be quickly broken. While the Holy Spirit’s leading and filling often comes first (as with Jesus and John, filled from the womb), water baptism follows as the outward seal of total surrender. I stress this doctrine first because “this we will do if God permits”—we teach these truths only when God opens the door. Newcomers arrive as babes; we put their need to receive the Holy Spirit first, not rush them into deeper doctrine.
Laying on of hands
Not a one-time event, but a continual ministry in the church. We lay hands for the Holy Spirit’s filling, healing, blessing, deliverance, and commissioning. In Gospel Assembly churches, it’s ongoing because the fight against sin is daily—people need fresh prayer, strength, and impartation regularly. We read the room, see hearts in need, and let God move through touch. No need to pull out snakes and whip people with coats.
“And this we will do if God permits.” Deeper understanding and growth require the Holy Spirit’s leading. I want to stress this again: if someone needs the laying on of hands to receive the Holy Spirit, don’t force maturity or revelation—start with repentance and faith first, then move into these foundational steps, and trust God to open the door. Equally, do not force someone to receive the Holy Ghost—patience is a virtue. Novice preachers are easy to spot on this principle alone.
Resurrection of the dead & eternal judgment
These two give the peace every seeker craves. Scripture speaks of two resurrections with three outcomes: the first is automatic life for overcomers, receiving the crown of life (Rev 20:4-6)—death isn’t the end, bodies rise glorified at Christ’s return. The second is for those coming out of graves: a judgment seat for the guilty, with a chance for others to wash their robes (Rev 7:14). If robes remain unwashed, eternal judgment brings the second death; if washed, the second death has no power over them.
If you believe in Jesus, you’re in! But you still need to die to your carnal nature and overcome. Pressing on to maturity isn’t instant for all. Mature believers taste immediate peace and reward (celestial body); others grow into hope later (new earth terrestrial body). Grace reaches some who never fully lived their first chance. He’s not a second-chance God—He’s a God of grace! For the truly ungodly, woe awaits. These truths calm fear and fuel urgent outreach. It is looking beyond the cross—the cross is where the true work begins. But knowing you will be saved if you believe in Jesus is still a reward I stand behind. Not all are called to the Body of Christ.
Final Thought
The four doctrines aren’t just head knowledge—they’re anchors for the soul. Baptism marks the new birth, laying on of hands brings fresh strength, resurrection gives unshakable hope, and judgment reminds us every choice echoes forever. If God permits, let these truths grow deep roots in you. Start where you stand: repent, believe, seek the Spirit, and press on to maturity. The peace you crave is waiting.

Author’s Note: This comes straight from Scripture and years of walking with seekers who ask the big questions about eternity. I know this teaching may prick some hearts. Not here to overwhelm or claim I’ve got it all figured out—just sharing what the Word and real life have shown me. I teach subject to question, discussion, and better understanding. Grace and peace to you.
